The bookies make West Ham overwhelming favourites to win Division One, but Preston will not give them an easy time of it in this midday clash. Even though I don't think the Hammers will win the division overall, they should be able to get something from the match at Deepdale, even though gritty Preston are likely to give them an old fashioned 'Welcome to the Nationwide League'. Around 10 players have left Upton Park, including Joe Cole and Glen Johnson to Chelsea, and Freddy Kanoute to Tottenham, but the side is still packed with quality. Michael Carrick and Stev Lomas are out, but Don Hutchison, Rob Lee and Matt Etherington can boss the midfield while a defence featuring Rufus Brevett, Thomas Repka and the up-and-coming Anton Ferdinand should not give much away at this level. Striker Jermain Defoe will be partnered by new signing David Connolly, who hit over 20 goals for Wimbledon last season, and the club have also recruited Liverpool striker Neil Mellor on loan. History favours the Hammers, they won the last fixture between the two sides 4-1 back in 1986 and have won five of the last 10 meetings while a further four have ended all square. I am not bold enough to back a win for West Ham outright but they should not lose this match. |
