The first pay-per-view match of the season looks a good one to return a profit after a few poor resultds yesterday. Newcastle have won their last three matches at Ellan Road, and considering Leeds' current situation, they look to earn at least a point. The home side are without Michael Duberry, Eirik Bakke and Michael Bridges but new signings Jody Morris and French trio Didier Domi, Zoumana Camara and Lamine Sakho, should figure at some stage. An interesting statistic is that Leeds last lost an opening League fixture on 23 August 1986, going down 2-1 at Blackburn. Since then eight wins and eight draws have been recorded whereas Newcastle's 4-0 thumping of West Ham last season was their first opening day victory in five years. Newcastle could well make it two years ina row as they should be a lot fitter and better prepared for the match. They ground out a Champions League victory midweek at Partizan Belgrade and as Fulham proved last season, an early run in Europe can help with domestic results. Plus, following a European game, Newcastle have won 12 of their last 14 games and drawn the other two, so Leeds could be in for a torrid afternoon. The Magpies will be without Hugo Viana and Darren Ambrose but former Leeds players Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate are set to play against their old club. |
