This is a tough game to call. Villa let us down last weekend when they lost to Portsmouth but they are a different proposition at home. They conceded only 14 goals at Villa Park last season a defensive record bettered only by Manchester United but are very poor going forward. Their main goal threats Darius Vassell may make the bench after suffering an ankle injury and Marcus Allback is doubtful after pulling a hamstring. Despite losing 2-1 at Anfield to Chelsea last week I slightly favour Liverpool in this match and they have a solid record: winning their last three league games at Villa Park and unbeaten in their last five visits. Villa have not taken maximum points off the Reds at home since a 2-1 victory on 28 February 1998 and have also not won their first home game of the League season for three years. Liverpool didn't play badly in last weekend's defeat and they will welcome back Steven Gerrard back from suspension while Emile Heskey and Vladimir Smicer have shaken off knocks. Don't expect goals or entertainment in this encounter but even a boring goalless draw will be enough to secure a winning bet. |
